Castle Menzies

Castle Menzies is a spectacular sixteenth century Scottish Castle, it was home to the Menzies Chiefs from 1488 to 1910, and the Menzies have been in Highland Perthshire since records began from the middle of the 12th century. Architecturally fascinating, it is a splendid example of the transition in Scottish castles from earlier Highland fortresses to later mansion houses. This Z-shaped building was designed not only as a residence but also was required to provide some protection in battle from enemies.

On display is the Menzies Claymore (sword) used by the chief at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, the final battle in the Scottish Wars of Independence. Open daily April to October each year.

Also you will not be herded round by a guide but you will allowed to roam freely where you like.
